Building a Sustainable Future — One Home at a Time

💡 Energy Trivia!

Question: What percentage of their income do low-income Pennsylvania households typically spend on energy bills?

A) 2–3%

B) 8–10%

C) Over 15%

Answer: ✅ B — Around 8–10%, even with assistance programs.

Sustainability is one of SCCLT’s core guiding values — and we see it as more than just energy efficiency. To us, it means creating homes that remain affordable forever, caring for our environment, and ensuring that our programs can thrive for generations to come.

In 2023, SCCLT expanded its stewardship through the creation of an Emergency Repair Loan Fund. This year, that fund helped a homeowner cover a critical roof repair — a key step in maintaining the “forever home” promise for current and future families.

Energy efficiency is another essential part of sustainability and long-term affordability. Every SCCLT home undergoes energy-saving upgrades during rehabilitation. At our newest single-family home on Old Boalsburg Road, we achieved a 21% reduction in air leakage, lowering future utility costs and improving comfort.

Why it matters: In Pennsylvania, low-income households spend an average of 8–10% of their income on energy bills, compared with about 3% for higher-income households. High “energy burdens” can strain family budgets, making efficiency upgrades and durable home repairs especially meaningful for long-term affordability.

By combining lasting affordability, environmental care, and responsible stewardship, SCCLT continues to build a stronger, more sustainable community — one home at a time.

More Support Programs in the Works

SCCLT is growing its impact through new partnerships and innovative programs.

🌱 Sustainable Landscaping Program:Through a partnership with the Centre County Conservation District (CCCD), SCCLT is developing a sustainable landscaping program for low- to moderate-income homeowners. The goal is to make the benefits of rain gardens, shade trees, and native plants accessible to everyone — promoting greener neighborhoods and healthier local ecosystems. This initiative aligns with community priorities outlined in the State College Borough’s 2022 Sustainability Plan and the Centre Region COG’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (read more here).

🏠 Safe & Sound Homes Grant Pilot Program: We’re also seeking funding to launch this new program, designed to help low- to moderate-income homeowners with urgent home repairs and safety needs. The goal is to keep families safe, secure, and comfortable in their homes — today and for years to come.
